[BINDINGS - VICTORIAN]. HUMPHREYS, Henry Noel (1810-1879). The Illuminated Calendar. London: Longman & Co., 1845, 1846.
2 volumes, 4to. Original embossed cream boards stamped in gilt, blue, red, and green, all edges gilt (rubbing, some light toning, one rebacked); folding cases. Provenance: Anthony David Estill (book labels in book volumes)
The Illuminated Calendar was published by Longman & Co. at the end of 1844. Its quick success was thanks in large part to the calligraphic mastery of Henry Noel Humphreys. An order for a second volume to be published the following year was made, and plans were in place to create new calendars every year. These plans never came to fruition, though a calendar was produced for 1848 which utilized unsold 1846 editions. McLean, Victorian Book Design p.88.
